I’m Kari McLay — a social entrepreneur, fundraiser, and community builder with a Masters of Social Work & a lifelong commitment to heart-centred leadership.
I’m proud to own Tulipe Noire Clothing and serve as the Community Engagement & Fund Development Director at Victoria Native Friendship Centre.
I was raised by a free spirited bohemian artist - a single mother who raised me to be curious and to appreciate art culture and adventure. I also learned at a very young age the important values of hard work, generosity and inclusivity. I also learned early how to navigate chaos, uncertainty, pain and loss. And I learned to embrace that life is difficult.
My first career was in the beauty industry which served a purpose for understanding personal care, style and business. It also taught me that how we look on the outside means nothing in the greater scheme of human existence and purpose.
At 26, I chose a different path. Social justice. Crisis intervention. Parent Education. Working with vulnerable people struggling to get by. Working with other professionals who care about people struggling with hunger, homelessness, isolation, poverty.
As a proud Metis Cree woman, I’m especially proud to serve the Victoria Native Friendship Centre in my role as Director of Community Engagement & Fund Development. My responsibility to educating the corporate community in meeting the Call to Action #92 is what I strive to do day in and day out. Improving the lives of urban Indigenous first peoples. That is my purpose here on this earth.
I believe that everyone needs a place to call home. Everyone deserves to be housed, to be fed, to be healthy, accepted, and valued.
These are the values that guide my work and my life ~ from CEO of Tulipe Noire Clothing Inc. to the role of Community Engagement and Fund Development Director at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre (VNFC).
Please reach out to me if you would like to learn more about the work I do and how we can collaborate.
I value conversation, collaboration and goodwill. Let’s connect!
